Rogue - Ch MiJo's Irish Rogue, CDX, JH, WC

MY FIRST IWS

My first IWS was Shiel (Ch Oisin's Shiel, CD, WC) who I originally purchased to hunt, to run in field trials and to work in obedience. He was one of three IWS run in licensed field trials in the '70's; he is also the first IWS on the WC list (given by the Irish Water Spaniel Club of America) who was also a breed Ch and had an obedience degree. (He was the 4th IWS to be awarded a WC.) As for field titles, that is all he earned since the IWSCA started granting the WCX after Shiel had died and the AKC started the hunting tests much after he had passed on. Shiel was a wonderful dog to hunt over; he did very well in the trials considering that he was not started on training until he was 18 months old. Above all, what made him very special was that his great desire to please me made up for my totally novice training and handling.

THE START OF SARACEN IWS

From Shiel through two of his daughters, we started our breeding program. The first litter I bred was whelped in Dec. 1983. From that litter came Katie - Ch Saracen Irish Caper CD, JH, WC. Katie was a phenomenal natural upland dog and retriever. Before she was 1 year old she had had 60 pheasants shot over her. My husband hunted her exclusively in the farms around the town where he lived in north central IL. Katie had one litter. From that litter came our 'old guy' Rogue - Ch MiJo's Irish Rogue CDX, JH, WC - who is now 14 and retired.

Other litters that we have had have come through a second Shiel daughter, Princess - Ch Saracen Diamond in the Rough CD, WC. For her first litter we bred her to an Irish import Ch Yeates of Lisnabrogue CD MH TD WCX, the first IWS to attain the MH title. Yeates came from Eddie Lennon in Ireland. Eddie had bred IWS since the 60's expressly for field work. Yeates's father Cruiscin - Irish Field Trial Ch Cruiscin of Lisnabrogue - became the first of our breed to become an Irish Field Trial Ch in many, many years. Yeates' brother - FT Ch Slipper of Lisnabrogue - also became a FT Ch. From this litter of Princess to Yeates we got Hawkeye - Ch Saracen Hawkeye UD, JH, Keegan - Ch McGougan's M. Keegan O'Saracen, CD, JH -, a third litter brother who was run in field tests in the South and took 1sts in the puppy stake and derby stake (he was hit and killed by a car at age 20 mos.), Jiggs who went to a game warden in SD and hunted each season there, Sprite (hunted in ND) and Angie (who we hunted). It was through both Hawkeye and Angie that we continued this line. Princess had two more litters. The second was a singleton girl who was hunted in NM. The third time we bred Princess to Ch Whistlestop's Irish Dynasty CDX. All 8 pups from that litter had tremendous natural field ability. We kept a boy - Talo - Ch Saracen Blackwater Bog UD, JH. Of Talo's littermates, two brothers were hunted extensively (MN and WA) while two sisters are both hunted extensively and have field titles - Saracen Macha Dash Freebird Can WC and Saracen September Foxfire JH in OH. Briar (OH) was run regularly in field events run at the local club; for many years she took second place in the fall events and in the year's standings, but in the fall of 1996 placed first in both. That fall was a very special time for Briar's owner and the owners of Briar's niece because Briar took first place and Bayley took second place. Lastly, we still have one girl from that litter - Anda. She was returned to us at 8 1/2 years of age because her owners could not take care of her. She was first hunted the following fall at age 9. What a natural hunter she turned out to be!! She was a tireless, savvy, single-minded upland hunter. She is now retired at 14.5 years of age, but we had many memorable times with her. From Princess's last litter, we were able to carry this line only through one dog - Talo. All of these guys are gone now, but their memory lives on and, more importantly, their field desire, natural sweetness and loving personalities live on in their progeny.

PURPOSE IN BREEDING IWS FOR THE FIELD

With each breeding we strive to intensify and preserve the working ability of the dogs. Yes, some of the dogs are 'pretty dogs', but in addition they must be excellent workers and have something to offer the breed in terms of their working ability. Dogs that we have bred have routinely done very well in the field and obedience.

OVERALL BREEDING OBJECTIVES

Coupled to our objectives in breeding to preserve the working ability of the IWS is our aim to produce a true "all around" IWS - an IWS that is a loving family companion, sweet natured, has natural hunting instincts with a desire to please, natural biddability and working ability, one that can also excel in breed, obedience, field and other performance events. We personally like to obtain breed Ch's on our IWS and love to do obedience and tracking with them. To all of the above purposes are goals are to produce healthy Irishers that satisfy the breed standard - ones that are "smart, upstanding, strongly built ..... combining great intelligence ... and rugged endurance with a bold, dashing eagerness of temperament." [quoted from the AKC Official Standard for the Irish Water Spaniel]

Accomplishments of IWS that we have bred are listed below. For some of our litters we have bred to our own boys, for some we have judiciously chosen males that had the attributes that we are seeking to complement the girl. We have obtained only one girl from another breeder to breed to our boys - Easy - Whistlestop Saracen N by NW, JH. Easy's father was Open All Age qualified. Easy's brother whom we co-owned - Whistlestop's Saracen's Highlander, MH - was the second MH in the breed and is Amateur All Age qualified.

OUR DOGS AND HUNTING

All of our dogs are our personal house dogs, companions and hunting dogs. We primarily hunt upland game because that is what I like to do. The guys display good noses, biddability, marking and retrieving ability. They are diligent hard workers. Once they have the experience hunting pheasants, rarely does the pheasant elude them.

CONFORMATION

As for conformation, when we have gone to the specialties, we have done well, though due to our commitment to field work we have not attended many specialty shows. A few memorable wins include:

1979 - Ch Oisin's Shiel, CD, WC - BoB Olympic Kennel Club, backup show to
1979 IWSCA National Specialty

1987 - Ch Saracen Hawkeye, UD, JH - WD from BBE class, IWSCA Supported
entry in SC.

1992 - Ch Saracen's Stand and Deliver, CD, JH, WC - WB from the BBE class
(defeating 25 bitches to finish her Ch) IWSCA specialty weekend

1996 - Ch MiJo's Irish Rogue, CDX, JH, WC - JAM IWSCA National Specialty

1996 - Ch MiJo's Irish Rogue, CDX, JH, WC - BoB and Gr 4, IWSCA Specialty
weekend

1997 - Ch MiJo's Irish Rogue, CDX, JH, WC - Westminster Kennel Club

Lastly re conformation, because our emphasis has been on excellent working dogs, we have specialed only one dog - Ch MiJo's Irish Rogue. He was a multi-group placer in addition to his wins listed above. His show record has made him special, but his love of hunting, retrieving and just plain working has endeared him to us. He was the total dog. He is retired at 14 now. Unfortunately he just doesn't think that he is 14!!

FUTURE LITTERS

We are currently planning on having a litter this spring/summer. We will be breeding one of our girls to an outside male who we feel has the attributes that we want to see in an IWS. Inquiries are welcome. We expect these puppies to carry on the tradition of their forbearers.

PUPPIES

We currently do not have a litter.  We are planning on a litter in early 2006.  Tenative breeding:

Sire:  Ch Saracen's One Speed Only CDX JH TD WC
              OFA excellent
Dam:  Am/Can Ch Mainevent's Beauieau Ice
              OFA Good

Spike is a son of Ch Saracen Blackwater Bog UD JH and Ch Saracen Diamonds Are Forever  CD JH TDX and a grandson of Ch Saracen Hawkeye UD JH and Ch Saracen Penny of Clear Creek CD CGC.

Blue is a granddaughter of Ch O'Neill's Duncan Disorderly [littermate to Ch S. Penny of Clear Creek] and a great granddaughter of Ch Saracen Blackwater Bog UD JH.

This litter will be a line bred litter on some of our best working producing IWS.  And similar to the litter last year will go back to my foundation bitch, Ch Saracen Diamond in the Rough CD WC, my original male Ch Oisin's Shiel CD WC and Ch Yeates of Lisnabrogue CD MH on both sides of the pedigree. We feel these puppies will have the attributes we want to see in an IWS. Inquiries are welcome. We expect these puppies to carry on the tradition of their forbearers.
