Frequently asked questions.
1. Do students need a gun?
No, We will provide them for the class. If you are purchasing
a gun for a youth, we would suggest a youth 20/.22, Fleet Farm has them for
about $120. It's a nice gun that has 2 barrels one for a 20 gauge another for
a .22. It is a great gift for passing the course. We will also provide all guns
and ammo for the firing range.
2. Do parents/guardian need to stay
for the class?
We ask that you stay for the first 20
minutes of the first class. Other then that no. But they are welcome
to stay. And you can sit next to your student the entire class.
Keeps them in line and you can tell them about your knowledge
of the class and guns, our parents are a great asset.
Classes will start & stop to within
5 minutes to the scheduled times. We respect your busy schedule,
please arrive on time. We could REALLY use your help Wednesday
for the hands on gun portion when we have 11 stations.
3. If the parent attends the class all week, can they
test on Thursday and get certified too?
Yes, simply pay the $7.50, pass the test on Thursday
and you will be certified too. In many states everyone needs to be certified
to hunt.
4. What need the student bring to class?
An open mind and a desire to learn.
We provide hi-lighters, pens, student workbook, folders, regs
manual, guns, shells, and all testing materials. If you can, pick
up a pack of 50 of those small flag stickies to highlight certain
pages. It can be very helpful, but not required.
5. Will there be home work?
We will be going through 120 pages of
the student workbook throughout the week in class. There will
be 5-6 pages of homework pages to complete every night.
6. Need the student attend every night?
Yes, the DNR has a 12 hour class room
requirement. Four days at 3 hours a night is 12 hours, meeting
that requirement. We do the entire class in one week, other instructors
spread the 12 hours over 6 weeks. We prefer the concentrated week
of study to get it done. If you need to miss one night you have
picked the wrong class, we can not pass you.
7. When will the student know if they
passed the course?
If the student attends every night,
is safe with handling firearms and passes the test they will get
the results Thursday night. Last class 77% of our students got
3 wrong or less 94%+ on the test (you are allowed 12 wrong of
the 50 question). Our students KNOW the material and have shot
7 guns by Thursday before the test.
8. When will the student get their certificates?
If the student passes the course they
will get a temporary permit Thursday night. The DNR will then
send them their permanent card about 2 weeks later.
9. If the parent previously passed the
Hunter Safety course, how can they get a duplicate card?
Simply call 888-646-6367 the DNR will
send you out another card.
10. Will the student handle/shoot guns?
We have one of the most complete hands
on class in the state. Every student will handle, load and dry
fire at least 7 different types of guns. (All five long gun actions
and two pistols). All one on one with an adult. If as a parent
you are curious about pistols or long guns you are welcome to
attend. Students will also use real guns to learn safe carries
and how to cross fences. We use about 20 of our personal guns
in the course. In addition we have an optional day on the firing
range. We use our parents to work with the students and could
use your help.
11. My child has reading issues, how
is that handled?
We are aware of the problem, our son was in the same
boat. A few years ago we offered to read the test to the students. We found
a better solution.
We know the attention span and the work
load of our students. We thus teach all the course material once
and then review the test material every night. So the class gets
to hear the test material 4-5 times in one week.
In over FIVE YEARS we have had ONE
student get one extra wrong on the test. After reading the student questions
they got wrong, they answered them all correct and we passed the student. We
will work with the students, but 99% can do it just fine. Your student will
do fine and will be thrilled they pass on their own.
12. I might be interested in teaching
hunter safety
We are always looking for instructors
to help. We have 3 good instructors right now, with a class of
35 we could use 5 instructors. Come to class and we'll help you
achieve your instructor goal. If you are currently an instructor
give us a call and we'll use you at any level you desire.
13. Can a student learn in a class of 35 students?
It tears me a part to think of a young
man or young lady not to be able to hunt with their parent or
grandparent. It almost happened to my son. We open registration
for our class six months before the class and teach about three
times the average size Hunter Safety class. But we have a extremely
successful class because we are very aggressive at continual analyzes
and improvement.
After every class we analyze all the
questions our class got wrong and adjust our course based upon
the test results. As a result our students are extremely successful.
Last class 75% of the students tested a 94% or better. They KNOW
the material!
We cover all test material at least
FOUR times and cover some material not covered in other classes.
Our goal is for our students to be safe, knowledgeable about guns
and hunting, pass the course and have a positive experience.
14. How much does the class cost?
$15 The DNR has changed how they charge for
the class though. Since last fall they split the charge between the DNR &
the instructors. $7.50 goes to the class instructors to pay for all the class
materials: we have pop & treats every night, we provide folders, pens &
highlighters for all students. In addition to start a class it costs us about
$1000 in projectors, videos ect. without even talking about guns. We bring 15
of our guns to class for the students to handle... that's several thousand dollars
more. The ONLY thing that we get donated to the class is the classroom space
from the Mirage.
After the class is over you will need to have
a credit card to go to the DNR website to pay $7.50 and send in your pass code
to get your certificate.
