Will Spaying Affect my dog?
I have heard some horror stories about spaying dogs, what is
the truth?
Spaying her will not ruin her coat, affect hunting ability or
change her personality. It will only affect her reproductive
system for the better. She may be a little prone to weight gain,
but give her plenty of exercise and don't over feed and you will
be OK. I work for a vet, and owned spayed bitches, I never noticed
any real change in them!!! Honest.
Whoa Versus Hold?
I'm training my first Llewellin. I need someone to tell me when
I would use the "Whoa" command and when I would use
the "Hold" command, are these interchangeable, I think
I'm confusing him saying stay Whoa and Hold to mean the same
things, help me please!
Just use Whoa or Hold they mean the same But Hold sounds louder
in the field.
The bottom line is this... you want your dog to Whoa when he
sees/smells birds and goes on point. You don't want him chasing
after the birds. Once he Whoas, you want him to hold... I would
just use the word Whoa only. Don't confuse the dog. Whoa should
mean stop, hold, don't move, stay on point where you are, don't
chase... That how I have trained my dog.
Mast Cell Disease
Our NSDTR (Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever) just had a tumor
removed and the prognosis does not look good. It appears she
has mast cell disease. She is only three and a half years old
from a New Brunswick kennel. We are in Minnesota. Grasping at
straws, we can only pray the tests come back |
somehow wrong. We had a 2+ year wait to
get her. Our world is crashing! If anyone has any information
on this disease in tollers, we would love to hear from you. Is
this a genetic defect? Thanks for any help offered.
I'm sorry to hear that you and your dog are going through this.
Mast cell is normally treated with surgical removal. The vet
will seem to take considerably more tissue that it seems necessary
but this is to get a good clean margin around the tumor.
Was this done? If the tumor has not been removed, why not? Where
is the tumor located?
I had a female Golden with a mast cell finding twice. They were
found about 5 years apart and both were removed with good results.
When she died, it was not from mast cell.
Small Munsterlanders
I'm a English Large Munsterlander owner and I'm thinking of getting
a Small Munsterlander, but they're a very rare breed over here
as the English Kennel Club hasn't recognized them yet. Can anyone
with both breeds let me know if they have similar temperaments
and characteristics? I have cats and have no problems with them
and the Large Munsterlanders. Are the Small Munsters very vocal
in |
doors? Any help and information would be
very gratefully received. Thank you.
We have a small Munsterlanders and we have cats. She will chase
the cats IF they will run, but even then once they stop running
she just stops and "points" them. It is a game between
she and the cats. Some of the cats come right up to her and rub
all over her while she's on point. : ) As far as being vocal,
she is not at all, she will bark along with our border collie
if she hears something outside or if someone comes to the door,
but the minute you speak to her she quits. Sadie is our first
SM but we absolutely love her to pieces and my husband says she
is the most all around hunting dog he has ever had and by far
the most social.
Vizsla Retrieving
I'm just curious if it is natural for Vizsla's to fetch balls?
My guy is only 15 weeks old and he will retrieve in the house
but outside, he just chases the ball and if I'm lucky, he'll
pick it up. If they are fetchers and if what my pup is doing
is a normal progression of that, at what age do they normally
really start fetching?
I have seen many good Vizslas, many were great retrievers, mine
hated it, don't push him too hard yet. Slowly work into it and
use a lot of praise, a natural retriever is always the best. |
