December/January 2004 Now in our thirteenth
year. www.Bdarn.com

Welcome to the Dec/Jan issue of Bird Dog &
Retriever News. We are growing in leaps and bounds as the economy
recovers so welcome all our new readers.
For our long time readers, I'm starting to get caught up in life
and I think your going to like some of the improvements we are
making. We now are going to have a regular columns for pointer,
flusher and retriever trainers. We are also going to add a section
with the latest discussions from our vast bulletin board system
on-line. We are dropping the calendar of events for banquets
because we are not getting any cooperation from some of the conservation
organizations, most notably Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever.
The Ruffed Grouse Society and Quail Unlimited have been great
at getting us dates and we'd like to thank them. But that only
means a few more pages for articles.
I am starting a series I expect will take years. I am going to
do a series of articles on running hunt tests and field trials.
Not from an observer, but from a person who is running or has
a dog running in the event. In this issue I will start with springer
Junior Hunter, in the future look for pointer and retriever events.
Ron is running Scooby through flusher hunt tests and trials and
I'm running Jenny through the pointer equivalents. It's very
interesting the difference and what it takes to succeed in the
different events. In this issue we'll take a look at running
Junior Hunter Hunt Tests for the flushers.
So what else is in this issue? For the retriever people Dave
Duffey looks at hard mouth dogs and how to correct them. David
Krassler tells us about mastering the blind for springer people.
And Jerry Thoms tells us about tricks for pups. Ron and I went
on a day hunt at Oak Tree Resort as part of a writers workshop,
and had a great time. One new addition to the magazine is a column
called "Buy the book." You know how hard it is to tell
a book by its cover. In this column we will dig deeper and bring
you about a dozen pages of a book, so we'll all learn which books
are worth investing in. Plus we have some great additional articles,
news, events, advertisers and a laugh or two.
