ILP (Indefinite Listing Program) registration
for $25 from the AKC. The ILP program allows you to run in everything
except champion (Field Trial and Show) AKC events. With ILP you
will need to send pictures to the AKC and the AKC will determine
it looks like a certain breed and let you run in that type of
event.
To register for the hunt test you will need your papers. Everything
you will need to complete the entry form will be on your registration
papers, except those about the event itself. A copy of the hunt
tests registration paperwork can be found on the web at www.akc.org/pdfs/AFN999_1003.pdf
On the form you will need: the dogs full registered name, its
breed, registration #, gender, date of birth, name of sire and
dam and the name of the breeder, owner name and address, phone
and e-mail if you have one and who will be running the dog in
the event. In addition you will need the name of the club running
the event, date of the event, location, and what kind of event.
|
The event information you'll find in our
calendar of events at the back of this magazine or you can go
to the AKC spaniel events web page at: www.akc.org/dic/events/search
Fill out the form and mail it to the hunt test secretary, again
you can find that online. I would also give the secretary a
call. We always give their name and phone number in our calendar.
You'll feel better and you may need directions to the event.
The deadline to get the entry paperwork in their hands is usually
ten days to two weeks before the event. Oh you will also need
a check. Most events cost about $30.
Does $30 seem expensive? For that $30 you can drive up, take
your dog in a field where you know there has been planted at
least three birds, more probably six. The land has been reserved,
you will have two professionals give you advice on what kind
of work your dog needs. You will meet some great people and you
may end up with a meal out of the whole thing.

A Handlers Perspective
By Ron Guldan
Hi, I am Ron Guldan, I am 11 years old, this is my first article.
My dog Scooby is a two year old English Springer Spaniel. Scooby
came from Steve Banning's Northern Sky's Kennel. She was trained
by myself and Tony and Beth Ann Roettger of Roettger Ridge.
I did my first hunt test August 23rd at the Rice Creek Hunting
Dog Club. I passed both land and water on the first try. I learned
a lot.
To the event bring three or four bottles of water a day. It seems
like a lot, but it isn't. Your dog will go through it and spill
about half. Bring a bowl if you can. Also bring an orange vest,
whistle, collar and leash too. For yourself bring a chair and
water. The test will take all morning, but you may only be on
the course for five or ten minutes. So bring a kennel for your
dog.
Make sure your dog is trained to cover the field and will retrieve
a bird to hand. Also that your dog will sit and stay while doing
the water retrieve, and will retrieve within one step of you.
Hunt tests are very fun and exciting and you can meet some great
people and dogs, and learn a lot.
Ron Guldan hails from New Brighton. MN
