From the Publisher’s Desk

Welcome to the April/May 2023 issue of Bird Dog & Retriever News. Thank you: subscribers, advertisers, organizations and others.

We are a week late with this issue. But I have a good excuse. While feeding the critters just outside my desk at home I slipped on some ice from the bird baths we have and broke my ankle. I’m in a cast & crutches for six weeks.

The ONLY upside is this is slowest part of our year. In April still on crutches I’ll be visiting the local trials and tests and try to get some of you to grace our pages.

In the center spread of this issue is about forty pictures from Pheasantfest that was in Minneapolis a few weeks ago. It was great to see a ton of the gods of the bird dog industry and say hi.

Just to the right is my friend of thirty years Big D Daryl Cooper. I will start doing my articles again on the leaders in the industry. And Daryl is one of them.

We have a local breeder that is working with the AKC to bring a new spaniel into the AKC you will learn about this summer. All part of keeping our readers informed.

Other then that we have some great articles, an unmatched calendar and more state news about the birds than anyone else.

Stay warm as it’s time to start getting ourselves and dogs ready for the season ahead of us!

Looks like I’m out of space again!

See you next issue!

Trainer, Handler and Showman a talk with Daryl Cooper

By Dennis Guldan

If I count the number of friends I have had for 30+ years and see regularly I don’t know if I’d need a second hand. Daryl Cooper the dog trainer and focus of this article is on that list. I met Daryl in 1992 when we had Booths next to each other at Game Fair in Anoka. We had a bit in common. About the same age, we both served in the USAF and we both had booths trying to sell our dog products/services for our new companies. I had Bird Dog & Retriever News magazine, Daryl his training services. We were both smart high energy guys that both dodged the 97% of small business failure to still be around today. Daryl is very well known on the dog show circuit in the Midwest and actually extending to Europe. He’s one of those guys that if you walk into a dog show at any ring in the Midwest and just say: “Anyone seen Daryl? You’ll probably get directions” He’s well known and for good reason.

When I decided to start doing my Meet the trainer/breeder/judge/handler…. Column again I knew I wanted to get you the complete story of my friend Daryl. So, a few weeks ago Ellen and I sat down with Daryl at his training facility in Princeton, MN.

Daryl has had dogs with him his entire life. At thirteen years old he took a George Degiddeo GSPs, for Best of Breed at the Minneapolis Kennel Club show in 1973. Ten years later he ran another GSP at the Shorthair Nationals in Georgia. Though he’s a GSP guy his latest dog is a Wirehaired Vizsla a new breed for the AKC.

Daryl continued to show and train sporting dogs through High School. He knew at that age he wanted to be a dog professional. One day in High School he met an Air Force 2nd Lieutenant with a USAF training dog and Daryl knew where his future lie. The USAF trainer told Daryl to study Animal Science and get a degree and they always had an open slot for a dog training in the USAF. Which is exactly what he did. In 1982 he entered the USAF at Lackland Training Center. Within two years at Lackland him and his buddy were the top two trainers in the program. And his numbers have yet to be surpassed.

In 1985 Daryl left the USAF to start his own training program back in the Twin Cities. He took a job at Burnsville Toyota to get some sales and marketing experience to help with his dog business. That same year he showed the world his training ability at Game Fair where he was asked to do an eleventh-hour stand-in training seminar for someone who didn’t show. He has been doing so ever since.

Over the years he has been very note-worthy in the show ring. He doesn’t just show sporting dogs anymore and not just in the Twin cities. He has handled my Vizsla and came back with wins. He has shown from Oregon to Florida and New York to California. He handled the number two Spinone at Westminister. He was invited to the Eukanuba National Dog Show. He even got invited to show at Crufts in the U.K. Crufts is a little dog show with 35,000 dogs, run by THE Kennel Club. As Daryl puts it you can put SIX Madison Square garden inside of the Crufts facility. He offers his service in the show ring if you are looking for $130/show.

And Daryl is always working on something new. His latest project is a scent dog project he calls his Action Dog Association. The concept is brilliant. Ever lose your remote or car keys. You have an incredible assistant that could help you if they just knew what to look for. So, Daryl came up with four scents, he will sell you, that you can put on your: Keys, Remote, Wallet & Phone and then have your dog find THAT scent. What a great system! We are definitely buying some at his website www.actionDogAssociation.com

So, if you are looking for a trainer/handler whether it be in the field or show ring give Daryl a call but leave some time Daryl likes to talk his number is: 651-398-5766
