I have always wanted a Golden Retriever
since I was a little kid. So I have picked this breed of dog
to write about second.
History
In 1860 Sir Dudley Majori bank, the Lord Tweedmouth (so named
his estate laid at the Tweed River in the southwest Scotland),
they were impressed by some Russians circus dogs performing at
a Brighton, England circus that he bought the entire troop of
eight. Lord Tweedmouth was not in fact the origination of the
golden retriever, but he developed the breed, by crossing a rare
blond Flat Coated Retriever (then called a wavy coated retriever)
with the now extinct Tweed water spaniel.
The golden was granted separate status by the English Kennel
Club in 1913, and the American Kennel Club recognized the golden
retriever in 1932. In 1938 the Golden Retriever Club of America
was formed. |
The most complete records of the development of the
Golden Retriever are included in the record books that were kept
from 1835 until about 1890 by the gamekeepers at the Guisachan
(pronounced

Scotland. These records were released to public notice in Country
Life in 1952, when Lord Tweedmouth's great-nephew, the sixth
Earl of Ilchester, historian and sportsman, published material
that had been left by his ancestor.
About the breed today
In 2003 the AKC registered almost 52,530 goldens. Ranked the
breed 2nd in over-all popular behind the Labrador Retriever.
The are at home in the field, in the show ring and at home.
Fun facts of the breed
President Gerald Ford's favorite dog was a female Golden Retriever
called Liberty. Other famous people who have owned Golden Retrievers
are Chevy Chase, Bob Newhart, Ed McMahon, Frank Gifford, Mary
Tyler Moore, Bill Blass, Jimmy Stewart, and Oprah Winfrey.
Golden Retrievers are in the sporting group of dog breeds. It's
club was formed by mid-westerners.
